Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Murder on the Orient Express is too besotted with its lead actor and overwhelmed with its source material to look at either without rose-tinted glasses. It tries too hard, and the cast are lost in a showy script.
Baby Driver (2017)
I'm going to be addressing a problematic aspect of the movie: the way the female characters are written.
The Beguiled (2017)
The Beguiled isn't as bewitching as it claims to be. Despite its relational intensity, the story is squandered as a result of forced performances and an extremely weak script.
My Cousin Rachel (2017)
My Cousin Rachel is beautifully filmed and led by a mesmerising Weisz, but otherwise it's insufferably boring and poorly plotted.
Dunkirk (2017)
An atmospheric, riveting film with a haunting score, strong cast, and excellent cinematography. But the writers skimp drastically on plot and character.
Lady Bird (2016)
Lady Bird is an extraordinary directorial debut from Gerwig. It's a love story in more ways than one - messy, complicated, heartbreaking, confusing, and often funny. A wonderful movie.
Passengers (2016)
There’s nothing remotely romantic about this movie. Guy wakes up early. Guy feels lonely. Guy sees girl. Guy wakes girl. Guy dooms girl to death.
Hidden Figures (2016)
I laughed, I cried, I cheered. This film is unmissable and based on a true story. Watch it.
Miss. Sloane (2016)
Miss. Sloane is a stellar portrayal of a woman at the top of her game and prepared to do whatever it takes to win. It's about the blurred lines between good and bad, the cost of winning, and Jessica Chastain has never been better.
Jackie (2016)
Jackie's story is heartbreaking and powerful, but I don't think this film manages to capture that. The acting and scenes are too awkward, and the script doesn't dig deep enough. But visually, it is ethereal.
Lion (2016)
I’m not sure I would’ve picked up this movie had it not been for its Oscar buzz and Patel's win. But I'm so glad I did see it, because Lion is one of those movies that has such incredible heart that it only takes a few minutes for the tears to come.
The Light Between Oceans (2016)
Honestly, who cares if it’s a little melodramatic? The Light Between Oceans is so brilliantly acted and filmed, it’s an earnest and compassionate look at love, the choices we make, and the people for whom we sacrifice.
The Legend Of Tarzan (2016)
Him Tarzan. Her Jane. Where’s the feminist heroine we were promised? Where’s the refreshing new take on a tried and true adventure? They’re nowhere to be seen.
Jason Bourne (2016)
I recommend re-watching the previous films if you want some real Jason Bourne. And, if you're anything like me and want Jeremy Renner instead, watch The Bourne Legacy.
Room (2015)
One of the best films of the last few years. Larson and Tremblay are incomparable.
Money Monster (2016)
The cinematography is edgy, Clooney's screen charisma as dazzling as ever, and he and Roberts have natural chemistry. Unfortunately, that's all the film has going for it.
Arrival (2016)
Arrival looks at communication, relationships, and the choices we make in an astounding and heartbreaking new light. It deserved Best Picture, and Adams sure deserved Best Actress.
La La Land (2016)
Breathlessly real and beautiful, with Gosling and Stone intensely genuine in their dynamic roles. This film is compelling and inspiring, and its thought-provoking, hopeful, and relatable story is powerful.
